\nAdrenokortikotropisk hormon (ACTH), ogs\u00e5 kendt som corticotropin, er et spaltningsprodukt fra en st\u00f8rre precursor proopiomelanocortin (POMC). Dette 39 aminosyre-peptidhormon produceres i den forreste hypofyse ved stimulering af det corticotropinfrigivende hormon fra hypothalamus som reaktion p\u00e5 stress. Det stimulerer udskillelsen af steroidhormon, specifikt glukokortikoider i binyrebarken ved at virke gennem en cellemembranreceptor (ACTH-R). Hos pattedyr er virkningen af ACTH begr\u00e6nset til de omr\u00e5der af binyrebarken, hvor glukokortikoidhormonerne cortisol (hydrocortison) og corticosteron dannes. ACTH har ringe kontrol over udskillelsen af aldosteron, det andet store steroidhormon fra binyrebarken.<\/p>\n
