\nAdrenocorticotroop hormoon (ACTH), ook bekend als corticotropine, is een splitsingsproduct van een grotere voorloper proopiomelanocortine (POMC). Dit peptide-hormoon van 39 aminozuren wordt geproduceerd in de hypofysevoorkwab na stimulatie door het corticotropine-releasing hormoon uit de hypothalamus als reactie op stress. Het stimuleert de afscheiding van stero\u00efde hormoon, met name glucocortico\u00efden in de bijnierschors, door in te werken via een celmembraanreceptor (ACTH-R). Bij zoogdieren is de werking van ACTH beperkt tot die gebieden van de bijnierschors waar de glucocortico\u00efde hormonen cortisol (hydrocortison) en corticosteron worden gevormd. ACTH heeft weinig controle over de secretie van aldosteron, het andere belangrijke stero\u00efde hormoon uit de bijnierschors.<\/p>\n
